The Effects On Mental Health In The Military

There has been a considerable spike in mental health awareness this past year, but no one is bringing awareness to the military which is a field where people are continually being exposed to trauma. No one is talking about it, and now the average suicide rate has risen to 20 veterans a day and one suicide per day while in active duty (Mario).
The military has a stigma against mental health which is causing less than 30% of military personnel to seek help because they do not want to appear “weak” to their company. This stigma is causing service members to prolong their PTSD or Post Traumatic stress disorder, which is leading to long-term effects. These long-term effects are affecting their psychical health and future careers (Borah).

Military service members do have inside resources such as educational videos on mental health in Fort Hood, Texas. There are also outside programs such as the Civilian Medical Resources Network which consists of volunteered medical professionals who are willing to help. Even the most used method the resilience theory which is just extensive training on the body and mind which is teaching the soldiers to look past the trauma that they may experience. However, there is currently not a proper treatment plan that conforms to everybody that is why veterans either commit suicide or have to receive some extensive treatment for PTSD which can be expensive.
