The Thrill Of The Chase

Most people assume that I became a detective to help people, and they’re not wrong, but that was only a small part of the reason. I became a detective because of the thrill. The thrill of the chase. The feeling of having someone hide from you and the look on their face when you catch them. Some find it sick, and so I usually answer with something like saving lives or catching criminals. But I think that my reason makes me a better detective in the end. At least I was a detective, until that one night, until that one case ruined it all. I was a detective until the thrill of the chase was too much for me to handle.

It was the sixth of August; I remember that night; clearly, it was cold or at least colder than usual. There was a slight breeze, and Casey and I had just walked out of Joe’s Bar, ready to go home.

“Alright, Casey, I got to wake up early for work tomorrow, so I’ll see you later.”

“Wait, Jeff, there’s something I wanna tell you.”

“Yea,” I responded, yawning.

“Nevermind, just come to me tomorrow first thing, it’s important. And… take care of yourself, man.”

I chuckled, “Alright, see ya.”

Stafford was a small town; most people knew each other and took care of one another. Casey and I have been friends since we were kids, and he’s basically like a brother to me. I get in my car and start to drive home; although I am a little tired, there shouldn’t be any cars out this late. On the last turn into my neighborhood, a shadowy figure jumps in front of my car out of nowhere. Thankfully, I could brake before I hit it, I got out of my car, and then it ran away. I finally get home and throw my keys on the counter. I don’t bother to change or take a shower; I just go to bed.

The following day I wake up and get ready to go to the office. My phone was going off non-stop, so I just turned it off and decided to deal with whatever it was at work. I walked in, and it was silent, and all eyes were on me. My new partner, Danny, walks up to me, and I can already tell something is wrong by the solemn look on his face. I ask him what’s wrong, but he can’t seem to find the words. He then says, “Jeff, we got another murder case.”

“Ok then, there’s no time for you to be sulking about that. It’s better if we catch the guys that did this.” To everyone else, I was consoling Danny, but in reality, I was trying to hide the excitement I was feeling, to finally have another killer on the loose, to finally have another killer I could chase. But that excitement didn’t last.

“I’m sorry, Jeff. It was Casey. Casey was murdered last night between 10 and 11 p.m.”

“What?”

Getting himself together, he repeated himself, “Casey Jacobs was murdered last night between 10 and 11 p.m.”

The funeral was unsurprising. The only family Casey had was his mother. His father left when he was young, his grandparents were dead, and he had no siblings. All he had was my family and his mother, who could not stop crying. I loved her just like I did my own mother; she practically raised me ever since my own mother died. I walk up to her, and she bursts into tears in my arms. “He’s all I had. I had no one else. It was always just him and me. Why! Why did he have to die!”

“Mrs. Jacobs, you’re not alone. Casey was practically my brother, and you’re like a mother to me. Don’t worry,” I smile, “if I left you alone now, he wouldn’t let me hear the end of it.” She cracked a smile for a second and then went back to crying. After the funeral, I went back to my house, and before I could sit down, I heard the door ring. I open it and see Kate.

“Long time no see, big bro.”

“Kate! What are you doing here?” Kate is my little sister, and I hadn’t seen her in years ever since she went out to college. I didn’t really have a good relationship with her either, so seeing her at my front door was more of a shock than one would think.

“Well, are you gonna let me in first! It’s cold, you know!”

I let her inside, and we go sit down.

“You want something to drink?”

“Jeff. I heard about Casey.”

“Yea.”

“They told me you’re the one on the case. There has to be a rule against that; you should ask them to assign it to someone else.”

“No, I requested that I be assigned to this one. Usually, we’re not supposed to be biased or get close to our cases in this business. In fact, I’m not even supposed to be on this case due to my personal involvement. The department expects me to be completely unbiased. But when I find the guys that did this, I swear I’ll-”

“What are you gonna do, Jeff! Kill them,” Kate interrupts.

I just stare at her as tears drip down her face. She doesn’t understand; none of them do. I guess I’ll have to lie to her too. With a big smile, I respond, “Of course not. I plan on bringing them to the judge so they can be punished for their crimes under the court of law. It’s gonna be ok, Kate, I promise.” A promise I wasn’t able to keep.

“I can’t believe he’s gone,” she responds.

“Yeah, me neither. I was with him the night he died, and everything seemed fine, but the next morning he was just gone.”

“Do you remember anything? Anything that might help the case.”

“No. We just said our goodbyes… I just didn’t know it would be the last time I said that to him.”

The next day I walked into the office and informed Danny that I would be working on this case alone.

“What?! No man, I’m your partner. We have to do this together.”

“I’ll be working on the case alone, which involves investigating and collecting any evidence I find. It will all go to me.”

“Why? I know this is your friend, but wouldn’t you want all the help you could get?”

He was right. Having more people would make the case go quicker, but Danny was by the book. He followed the rules to the very end, and it made him a great detective. But right now, I didn’t want a detective. If I was going to make these guys pay, I needed to do it alone.

“No. My decision is final!”

I walk away and take my car to the scene of the crime. As of now, I know that he was murdered on the night of the sixth of August, between 10 and 11 p.m., next to Joe’s Bar. The cops and other detectives had already inspected it, and there were no prints anywhere. There was a broken glass bottle on the ground, and Casey had signs of being choked. So we can assume that the killer had smashed Casey’s head with a glass bottle and then proceeded to choke him until he died. There was nowhere to start, so I didn’t expect to find anything coming here.

Then I felt something pressed against my back, and a phone slipped into my pocket. I look behind me only to see a gun on my back, and the man is pointing towards the phone. I pick up the ringing phone, and he walks away.

“Hello, Detective Shaw.”

I am frozen in place with millions of questions going through my mind.

“Now you’re going to wanna listen carefully, Detective. First, you are to not do anything out of the ordinary and keep going on your walk. You and I are going to have a small chat, and after that, you will throw this phone and walk away.”

“And why should I comply?”

“Well, if you don’t, you will lose your sweet sister Kate. Whether you choose to believe that or not is your choice.”

“Ok, ok, I understand. Just who are you, and what do you want?” I start my walk and can’t find the man anywhere. He had a hoodie on before, so I couldn’t catch his face, and his voice was distorted.

“You’ll find out what I want soon enough. But for now, I’ll tell you this. I’m the person that killed your friend, Casey Jacobs.”

Once more, I froze, but this time not out of fear, but out of anger. I was talking to the man that killed my best friend. But I had to stay calm; if I did anything suspicious, he would kill Kate.

“Don’t have many words now, huh. Well, then I will do all the talking. I have a vendetta against you, Jeff. And for that reason, Casey Jacobs had to die, and it was all your fault. They say you’re one of the best detectives in Stafford Shaw; we’ll just have to see about that. Have fun, Detective.”

Then I heard the beep, and just like that, he was gone.

I run home only to find my house on fire. Panic fills my mind as I remember Kate was staying at my house. An hour later, they tell me she is dead. I think this might have been my breaking point. In my mind, there were no more detectives and criminals. Now it was just the hunter and the hunted. I swore that day I would kill whoever did this; of course, in the end, that would be easier said than done.

I didn’t bother going to the funeral, for I had nothing on my mind other than to kill the man that did all this. Of course, I had no leads, but I got another phone call from an unknown number. All I heard was a distorted voice telling me to meet them next to Joe’s bar tonight at 3 a.m. Now that I think of it, I should have brought it back up, not for my safety but for them to stop me from what I was about to do. But at this point, I was too far gone, fueled with rage I was determined to do only one thing. When I arrived there I hadn’t seen anyone, and then a dark figure came out and who I had seen had broken me.

“Kate!?”

“Hey, Jeff, I’m glad you came.”

“No. Don’t tell me you…Did you kill him,” my voice breaking.

Tears started going down her face.

“No, Jeff. I didn’t kill him… I’m so sorry.”

“I don’t understand. If you didn’t kill him, who did? And why are you apologizing.”

“Jeff. You killed Casey.”

Liar. She’s obviously lying. Images of a dying Casey start to flood my mind. WHAT IS THIS! I don’t understand. No…

“NO! YOU’RE A LIAR.”

“It’s true, Jeff. The night you went out with Casey, I was there, and you killed him that night.”

The night of the sixth of August

Kate’s P.O.V.

“You have to tell him now,” I whisper to Casey.

“I know. I know. Just wish me luck,” he chuckles nervously.

Casey was about to tell Jeff that we wanted to put him in a psychiatric hospital. We were worried that what he saw as a detective was getting to him, and he started acting strangely recently. We just wanted to make sure he was okay.

“Hey, Jeff.”

“Yeah, man.

“Now, I know you’ve been really stressed lately, and you’ve gotten a lot of tough cases,” he took a deep breath, “so I’ve decided to put you in a psychiatric hospital.”

“What!? Bro, you’re crazy. I’m fine; there’s nothing wrong with me, so forget it.”

“Listen, I’ve already made the calls. There’s a great hospital that has other cops there and-”

“I SAID NO!”

“I already made the calls, Jeff. You’re going. Trust me, it’s for your own good. I’m just looking out for you, man.”

“Oh. So you did this without me knowing. Ok. I understand perfectly.”

He was quiet the rest of the night, and when we walked out of the bar and were far enough away, he took a glass bottle and smashed it on Casey’s head.

“JEFF NO! STOP DON’T DO THIS!!”

My pleads were falling on deaf ears, and eventually, he choked Casey to death. I was sitting there speechless, unable to believe what had just happened. Minutes passed, and then he got up and left. He went to his car and left to go home. I called the police but couldn’t bring myself to turn my brother in. I had loved him too much. I went to him the next day, and he had acted as though nothing had happened, so I decided to allow him to believe this reality and serve as the villain.

“That’s what happened, Jeff. I tried to let you live this reality you made for yourself. But I couldn’t stay sane knowing what I knew, and I had to tell you the truth.”

“YOU’RE A LIAR! YOU’RE LYING! IT’S A COVER-UP BECAUSE YOU’RE THE MURDERER!”

“Jeff. You suffer from an extreme case of Delusional Disorder. It’s where you create a false world to escape the dark reality of your past. You couldn’t live with killing your best friend. Your brother. That you made another world where you were the hero trying to find his killer.”

“No. NO!”

“Think Jeff. Have you been feeling a thrill from chasing this killer? Do you even remember what happened before you and Casey left the bar? I know there are gaps in your memory, and it’s because you are hiding from your truth. Please, Please try to understand.”

“Yeah… I think I understand.”

“You do!? Thank goodness, Jeff,” she goes and hugs me.

“I understand perfectly. You’re trying to make me think I’m crazy so you can get away with killing Casey. But I swore I would avenge him, so I won’t let you trick me.”

“What! No, that’s not what I meant-” blood spilled out of her mouth.

I had shot her in the abdomen.

“I guess in the end… I couldn’t save you, brother. I’m sorry.”

She apologized. Wait. Now she was proven right. I am a killer, and I just killed my sister. No. NO!!!!!! This wasn’t supposed to happen. I was supposed to kill the person who killed Casey and then myself. NO!!!!

I go home and go to bed.

The following day I wake up and get ready to go to the office. My phone was going off non-stop, so I just turned it off and decided to deal with whatever it was at work. I walked in, and it was silent, and all eyes were on me. Danny walks up to me, and I can already tell something is wrong by the solemn look on his face. “I’m sorry, Jeff… It was Kate. Kate was murdered last night between 3 and 4 a.m.”

“What…”

Getting himself together, he repeated himself, “Kate Shaw was murdered last night between 3 and 4 a.m.”
