The pitfalls of the internet

I think an interesting thing to observe along with the things mentioned in this article is how the internet affects us period. Not only in the morning. Not only when we are trying to be productive. But all the time.

The internet has caused us to be less focused on our goals, and provided an easy escape from the real world. In a way, it is a method of avoidance. The conducer of procrastination. Now of course the internet can be used in ways that are productive and valued, but often times the internet is used just to fill time.

With so much information available at the the snap of our fingers, we as a society have lost our abillity to work for something, and then be patient enough to see the eventual benefits. You hear adults talk about all the time how kids have their faces buried in their cell phones.

My dad is the owner of a small business company that often recruits college graduates. Over the years, he has said that there is a noticeable difference between the kids coming out of college now than there was even ten years ago. He says that the ability to endure hard things has been lost. It is now all too common to give up on something because it is not convenient, comfortable or familiar. I contribute this partially to the internet. We take comfort in the internet because it is predictable, mindless, and a good time. If an app doesn’t load however, we close it after a few short seconds because it is not worth it.

There are many things in our lives that will not be comfortable, but will be worth it. We need to learn to control our internet consumption because it truly is creating bad habits. Instant gratification is not a positive thing despite its convenience. We can endure hard things — it is time to embrace it.
