What the heck is hiihat?
You know how Xerox became the common term for photocopy? Or Kleenex became synonymous with facial tissue? That’s how Google is the noun for search engines.
So as I came to tell the story of hiihat being a search engine for all things Black, I understood more and more that people saw this as the Black Google.
I guess I’ll take it. Here are some frequently asked questions I get about searching on hiihat.

What is hiihat?
hiihat is a discovery platform on a mission to make the search for all things Black more useful, social, and equal. In laymen terms, we are a search engine that returns results verified as Black-founded, Black-owned, Black-operated, etc.
Why does hiihat exist?
It’s a hassle to find all things Black in one place. When you’re on the hunt for news, products, professionals, media, and services by Black people — directories and marketplaces, as well as the world’s most popular search engines barely touch the surface.
Search engines help us find stuff. We trust these platforms, our closest friends, colleagues, and loved ones when we need recommendations or help with research.
We decided to create a niche search engine that can help you find what you’re looking for fast. Hiihat increases your chances of purchasing and patronizing Black as well as circulating your dollar much faster and longer.
Most of all, hiihat is saving you time.
How does hiihat make money?
Like all commercial search engines, we make money when a user searches and then clicks on a paid search ad on the search results page.
Is hiihat a non-profit?
No. We are an LLC, owned by a Black woman. =D
How can I add hiihat to my browser?
Who started hiihat?
Our founder is Ngozi Ahanotu-Anorue. She started hiihat.com because she got tired of having to use so many different avenues and platforms to shift her life to 80% black-owned. She has always and continues to be committed to telling Black stories, amplifying Black voices, loving Black people, and living Black life better.
Hiihat.com was built and is operated by Black software developers.
How does hiihat search work?
Our platform helps you search the web based on search queries, also known as ‘keywords”.
Our technology crawls thousands of websites then parses it into an index. When you search, our algorithm returns the Black results, every time. For accuracy and relevance, we limit the number of results you receive.
Something else you should know, we aren’t equipped to answer questions just yet.
Why am I seeing ads when I search?
Most search engines show ads next to or above their search results. If a user clicks on one of these ads, the search engine is paid for having directed the user to the advertiser’s site.
What sites do you crawl?
We crawl Black-founded and Black-owned databases, marketplaces, news sites, local service websites, e-commerce sites, listservs and more. We also add Black-founded, Black-owned, and Black-operated businesses to the Places tab.
Why do you only index Black-founded, Black-owned, and Black-operated websites?
With respect to our elders, ancestors, aunties, etc. that busted their behinds to create a business then sell it for any reason, these same companies likely employ Black people and create wealth in the Black community in some way. Also, Black people own franchises as well. Respectfully, they all deserve to be patronized accordingly.
Are my searches private?
Your searches are private and nothing you search for on hiihat.com is tracked anywhere else. We don’t use cookies to follow users and we don’t collect any personal information when you search.
Do you collect my personal data?
No.
Why use hiihat search instead of Amazon, Google or something else?
We fully recognize that you can’t beat Google when it comes to online search. It’s not our intention to truly become a ‘Black’ Google either.
Hiihat is a platform you can trust to give you links that belong to Black websites when you search. This helps you get to what you’re looking for easier, make a purchase or share, ultimately circulating the dollar in the Black community faster and longer. It is a great supplement to Amazon, Walmart, CNN, etc.
What if I cannot find what I’m looking for?
We acknowledge that for some search queries you might not always find what you’re looking for.
However, using hiihat as your default search engine when you are looking to buy a product, use a service, read the news, or go down rabbit holes is still the best way to circulate your dollar in the Black community.
Do I need to sign in to search?
No.
Can I personalize my search?
Not at this time.
How do I open a search result in a new page?
You can thank our Lead Developer, Bam, because he went ahead and did this for you!
However, if you still have trouble with it, here’s how to make it happen. If would like to open a page or an image in a new tab right from the search result page, you have two easy options:
Simply hold the ctrl and the alt/option key and left click on the image you would like to open in a new tab. The image will open in a new tab next to the one you are currently using hiihat with.
Right click on the image and choose “open image in new tab”. However, some browsers don’t offer this function, so the keyboard shortcut probably is the easiest to go by.
