job of my dreams

one morning in may i woke up and started calling local flower shops, asking if they needed any employees, as one does. the first woman who answered said no, they’re good. the second woman who answered said yes, and could i start today? i said that i couldn’t today but i’ll be there tomorrow and i got an address for their garage, which is where they make arrangements opposed to the actual shop.

so the next morning i headed out. the garage was an actual garage in the suburbs, but instead of cars (or storage, like my family uses it for), there was space for making arrangements, ribbons, and a large cooler with shelves to keep the flowers. the only thing i brought with me was my iPod, which was good for a map but not for directions (and had some sweet beats) and my upbeat and likable personality. just kidding, it was just my ipod and my quiet ass.

i was introduced to maquelle, ginger, janna, and kristine. ginger and janna were the owners of the local business, both with husbands, children, and a side business that actually made a livable income (so i guess that that makes the flower shop the side buisness…). maquelle and kristine were woman with school behind them, husbands, and no children.

maquelle was the one who ‘hired’ me, interestingly enough. the garage was busy, with other woman coming in and out, loading their cars with flowers and hastily making arrangements. i listened to about half a dozen apologies, they told me that they were never usually this busy, the reason was the impending mothers day.

i quietly thanked mothers day and my unintentional good timing, since it was almost certain that they never would have accepted my pathetic attempt at a job if it wasn’t for the fact that they were completely busy. they asked me what my experience with flower arranging was, i told them it was non-existent, and they told me that i could help make deliveries and loaded up my car and gave me a list of addresses.

since my gps was a crappy ipod i did what my ancestors must’ve done and actually read the addresses. i asked people if the name on the card lived there and didn’t go to the wrong house once (!). it was so relaxing for me to drive around to neighborhoods i wasn’t totally familiar with, listening to my music, and brightening peoples day.

after that day i was essentially on call to make deliveries and to watch the shop. i started getting comfortable with making arrangements. no matter what i was doing, i felt relaxed and happy, which was the first time in my employment history. anyway. that’s how i essentially walked into my dream job.
