Asymmetric vs Symmetric Routing

Asymmetric and symmetric routing refer to different ways that packets can be forwarded through a network.

Symmetric routing is when the path that a packet takes from a source to a destination is the same in both directions. In other words, the same network interfaces are used for both sending and receiving packets. This type of routing is typically used in small networks or when there is only one path between two devices.

Asymmetric routing, on the other hand, occurs when the path that a packet takes from a source to a destination is not the same as the path it takes when returning from the destination to the source. This can occur when there are multiple paths between two devices, and different paths are used for sending and receiving packets. Asymmetric routing can cause problems with some types of network traffic, such as stateful protocols like TCP, which require packets to follow the same path in both directions.

Asymmetric routing can also lead to issues with security devices like firewalls, which may have different policies for traffic that is incoming versus traffic that is outgoing. If traffic follows different paths in each direction, this can cause problems with the firewall’s ability to inspect and control traffic.

Overall, symmetric routing is simpler and easier to manage, but it may not be practical or possible in some larger networks. Asymmetric routing can provide better network performance and redundancy, but it requires careful planning and configuration to avoid issues with network security and reliability
