Hope is the Thing with Feathers

I want to believe in hope
It is the foundation of strength, it is
the small voice that keeps the
heart from giving in to some dark thing,
that would love to devour it with
razor teeth and bloody mouth, the feathers
of a lost dream still hanging from that
terrible maw. But that nightmare perches
on my shoulder and lures me in
to its embrace, and soon the
light of hope is barely a flicker in my soul.
