Email Just got a Etiquette Update

I know the Google Gmail update has only been out for a week or so. However I feel confident that I can make many predictions about its effects, and how that applies my life (as nearly every google update relates directly to my life.)

One of the predictive text function is exceptionally polite. Every email I send now starts off with “Hi X, how are you?” Or “X, hope everything is well.” The list that Google has seems to be extensive, so I have not yet gotten around to testing them all. However my early prediction is it should bring back the formality and polite conversation that traditional mail and email use to be well known for.

For most people and me at my age, the idea of polite conversation and being a member of polite society, in general, is a “when its convenient type situation.” And in this instance it is, I have not justification for not starting out nearly every email I send with a jaunty “dear sir or madam.”

Just before writing this piece it struck me that Google could very well be taking this behavior from what it sees in a daily email. Merely understanding that this is what people want. You have to think they are using read rates and other metrics to decide what to suggest. I mean google is google, and it knows what we are talking about and how we say it.

Either way, this update and the politeness it shows is excellent news for polite society. Either the people I converse with and I need to get up to date and start showing refinement for each other during emailing (I am very likely to skip over reading that part all together on these emails), or the world as a whole can move one step further away from barbarianism. To more closely match those that we have in the past called our betters (they were the rich and royal.) The same part of society that does not like the off the cuff style conversation customarily found on the interweb in your facebooks and your WhatsApp.

PS. I hope that I can train this thing to say what I want. Such as “Yo homes” or “what’s crackalackin” or even go super polite old school “It is my great pleasure to write to you once more James.”
