How to win in the social media app market

When most people hear of someone developing a social media app, the first thought they have is “why bother?” I mean, who is going to compete with Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, and all those major players, right?

It is a common assumption that the tech giants own the social media space and many people discount this genre as a lucrative space to create really innovative, engaging, and highly successful apps and solutions for this market.

Let’s break down the stereotype. When people think social media, in many cases, they think of apps that are meant to be adopted by all. They think Facebook, where everyone (almost) is on there, from kids to grandparents — although this trend is driving the kids away. But that’s another story. People think that social apps are defined by being broadly popular, transcending demographics and appealing to all.

When Facebook launched, it was designed for use in a single school until they discovered that people liked it and it had the potential to expand further. SnapChat was marketed to young teens before it gained wild popularity. Instagram was a platform for creatives before it became mainstream.

Don’t let this impression of competing against the giants deter you from conceiving great ideas in this space. Whatever your genre, it’s original ideas, concepts and content that form great apps. Create something that users will love, and success will follow.

Let’s look at some social media apps carving their own niche and gaining some serious attention.

All these apps have in common is that they are not directly trying to compete with something else. They are original, unique solutions designed based on the wants and desires of the users they are aiming to please. This is what it takes to be successful in the social media space, be aware of competition but don’t try to be like them.

So, is there opportunity in the social media app market? We say, heck yes!
