Your Guide to Types of Words

Nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.

In order for us at Fill in the Blanks to work together cohesively to create stories that make sense, we’re going to need to be on the same page about things like what the hell an adjective is.

For that reason, we’ve put together a handy guide.

Take a look at the difference between using the right word types in an example story and using the wrong word types.

…The vegetation is [adjective] and the climate is [adjective]. The crew is safe and healthy, but a bit [adjective] from hyperspace travel. As soon as the ramp comes down, Tim [transitive verb] down onto the ground and [transitive verb] the air…

We’re ready to fill it in!

…The vegetation is angry and the climate is smelly. The crew is safe and healthy, but a bit naked from hyperspace travel. As soon as the ramp comes down, Tim flaps down onto the ground and smacks the air…

Okay, that works! Silly, but it works.

…The vegetation is Joe and the climate is walking. The crew is safe and healthy, but a bit singing from hyperspace travel. As soon as the ramp comes down, Tim very down onto the ground and smoke the air…

Ew, that does not work.

Look, I’ll admit it — I didn’t manage to learn all of these word types as a kid, so there’s no shame in needing some clarification!

We’ve put together a guide below in order to clarify any word types you may be unsure about.

Verbs are a state or an action. They’re words such as walk, read, be, laugh, see, dance, and argue.

The prior example asked for transitive verbs. A transitive verb only makes sense if it’s connected to an object, while an intransitive verb doesn’t need an object. Look.
