When Love is a Dove Chocolate Bar

My love isn’t on autopilot.

We all do it. Drive home from work without remembering a single moment of the drive. Breezing through our day at home and wondering where the day went?

You know you were busy but what, exactly, did you do? What is there to show for it?

How much else do we keep on autopilot? Are our relationships on cruise control? Not being thought about in detail?

When was the last time you told your spouse “I love you?” Not in an automatic way but in a thoughtful moment?

Not because I don’t love him. Let’s face it though: he doesn’t sit on my lap and lick my nose with affection every afternoon while I pet him.

Wait… I didn’t mean it that way. You know what I mean.

I’m the kind of girl that says what I want. Repeatedly, if that’s what it takes. He says that was part of why he married me. Yay, me!

But he doesn’t say “I love you” unprompted. It can be a bit discouraging. If I say it and look at him, he will laugh. If I say, “Now it is your turn,” he will say it in a joking way.

I know women who would divorce over that. Or at least make it a big deal. Probably the latter but they would SAY the former.

I shrug, sigh, and let it go until next time. There is always next time because I am me and he is … him.

Who knows how often is “enough?” There are no official guidelines I’m aware of. Enough is as often as you feel you should.

I am grateful every day for my husband. It would be nice to hear he feels the same about me. It isn’t a deal-breaker.
