The Unraveling of America by Wade Davis

It’s deeper than the end of the American Era

Wade Davis doesn’t hold back, he says the American Era is over, and he makes it shockingly clear.

Each fact that he calls out is a nail that he hammers into the coffin, as it falls into its own dark ages.

He leaves no room for debate on this. His tone is ‘after-the-fact’, which might make you mad, stun you, or give you satisfaction — but he’s saying more than what the title says.

His biases stain his main theme, and you have to read between the lines to see the world and global history through his eyes.

It’s as if he’s a lawyer, defending Western civilization in the Court of Global Humanity and History; as if the West stands accused, of many crimes and atrocities.

He makes present-day USA to be an anomaly of Western civilization. The USA of the past, at certain points in its past, from certain perspectives, is defined to be Western civilization according to him. He picks only the good apples to throw into the basket, forgetting that the bad apples came from the same Western tree.

He suggests that moralistic ideals are possessions of the West alone — preaching morality and human rights is all that is needed, practice is unnecessary.

He says that China botched COVID in Wuhan too but the USA did such an even worse job, that it was forgotten — he does not even mention one instance of how non-West societies and cultures did good by their own peoples and neighbors. Although he bashes the USA, he provides plenty of praises too.

To him, it seems that the concept of a multipolar world is scary. So is a world where there is no Western power dominance. History from the 14th century on looks European, or American to Wade Davis, and before that, the pages are blank.

The Opioid crisis and war on China, caused and declared by the English in forgotten past history, are Western transgressions but deleted. The Western colonizations, or destructions, of half a billion Indians and, later, genocide of Native Americans, are also deleted. French military colonizations on Africa omitted. Revisionist history by a cultural anthropologist?

Present-day France, part of Western civilization, resembles a return to racist fascism, a familiar sight for Europe. Austria, Hungary and Germany have already seen neo-fascists ascending to prominence. None of these are called out by Wade Davis. Only the Danes, Finns, Canadians and Scandinavians, for their socialist democracies with economic safety nets, are called out implying that they are the true representatives of the West. Denmark’s present-day record of ugly intolerance is not noted.
